  1. Housewife’s Ascent -:-- / 6:27

She was born in rural poverty
No place to call her own
She pledged her true allegiance
To that man on his throne

She’d met him on a bright spring day
Brightest that she’d seen
But the curtain hadn’t opened
On her bright suburban dream

She cooked and cleaned and worked and swept
While hubby watched TV
She tried to hide it when she wept
To save that sainted he

But have you heard of any saints who scream and shout
and roar and scream and rage?
Who drink and hate and beat their wives
And forget the next day?

And it’s the housewife’s ascent
She’s flying past the second floor
Breaking through the rooftop
No need to use the door

It’s the housewife’s Ascent
Finally she can see
There’s light outside the window
And someday she’ll be free

Before leaving she searched every face
Trying not to scream
She felt foreign, lost in outer space
Their eyes never strayed from the TV screen

She looked inside and felt around
Like searching in the dark
She listened to that vast expanse
Until she heard her lark

And it’s the housewife’s ascent
She’s flying past the second floor
Breaking through the rooftop
No need to use the door

It’s the housewife’s Ascent
Finally she can see
There’s light outside the window
And someday she’ll be free

She gathered up her woman strength
Her woman spirit song
And silently she flew away
Her life had been all wrong

And it’s the housewife’s ascent
She’s flying past the second floor
Breaking through the rooftop
No need to use the door

It’s the housewife’s Ascent
Finally she can see
There’s light outside the window
And someday she’ll be free
